Internexus Anime Convention is now on indefinite hiatus

First off, the entire team at Internexus 2019 would like to thank all of our past attendees, artists, vendors, panelists, guests, sponsors, donors, volunteers, officers, and organizers for their help all these years. Without you guys, Internexus would never have made it as far as it has.

Like with all the other years, our team has been working tirelessly since September to make Internexus 2019 happen. Unfortunately, various circumstances have arisen that have made Internexus 2019 no longer possible.

What happened?

As some of you may already know, Internexus is organized and run by various anime clubs within Fremont. Specifically, Internexus 2019 is organized by WHS Japanime Club and AHS Japanime Club. As such, we are subject to limitations placed on high school clubs.

In December 2018, the Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) and the Fremont Unified District Teachers' Association (FUDTA) filed for Impasse regarding their salary negotiations for the 2018-2019 school year. In January 2019, Fremont teachers began working to the rule.

What does it mean to Work to the Rule?

This means that Fremont teachers will only work their contractually-obligated hours (from 8 AM - 3 PM) and responsibilities. Teachers will not be offering any after-school tutoring sessions, writing letters of recommendation, or participating in any non-mandatory activities.

How does this affect WHS Japanime Club & AHS Japanime Club (including Internexus?)

All high school clubs require the presence of a teacher advisor in order to function. This includes holding meetings, events, etc. Since teachers are not contractually obligated to advise for school clubs, they cannot host any club events or meetings during the Work to Rule. As such, most high school clubs in Fremont are effectively shut down.

Because Internexus is a club-hosted event, it is affected by the Work to Rule as well.

What if the Work to Rule ends before the school year ends? Can Internexus 2019 still happen?

This is very unlikely. Even if the Work to Rule were to end within the next month, the amount of time it takes to organize an event on this scale would make it unlikely for an event in 2019 to be possible. However, if anything changes, we will post updates about it on our social media and on our website.

Why is Internexus on an "indefinite hiatus"?

There are several reasons why we have opted to announce an "indefinite hiatus" as opposed to simply announcing the cancellation of Internexus 2019. For instance, at this point, we do not know how long the Work to Rule will last. Further, we do not yet know if next year's club officers will want to continue organizing Internexus.

In conclusion

Again, thank you all so much for the support over the years. If Internexus returns from our hiatus, we will be sure to keep you all updated! Please make sure to follow our social media and subscribe to our mailing list to hear from us in the future!
